Book, watchmaker training

"The publishing house succeeded in republishing one of the best-known textbooks for the first years of apprenticeship of a watchmaker from the first half of the last century in outstanding quality. The person responsible is again Michael Stern with his perfect digitalisation technology.

The book by Hanke was first published in 1911 by the publishing house, Diebener, Leipzig, with the objective of providing the basic skills needed to teach a watchmaker apprentice the necessary skills for the job and to help understand what is being done. It covers only the repair and repassage of clocks and watches, since the new production of complete clocks and watches was no longer relevant at that time. The entire subject matter is taught without any formulas or trigonometry, only on the basis of clear illustrations. Despite the fierce competition of Sievert's "Leitfaden für die Uhrmacherlehre", Hanke's book stood its ground well, and was published by DUZ in Berlin in 1922 in its 12th edition. It was also written for the apprentice watchmaker. The theoretical supplement to the aforementioned two introductory works was then offered by Professor W. Sander with his 1923 book, Uhrenlehre, which was also published by Wilhelm Diebener. There you will find the formulas necessary for calculations of complete clocks and watches, and thus the complete theoretical foundation of the clock technology.

The present work by Hanke first deals in great detail with low-cost clocks, based on the Black Forest clocks. All related elements, such as the gear movement with lantern pinions, hook timing, pendulum and its suspension, rack striking mechanism, are explained, repair instructions given, and the assembly of a clock described in detail. The next chapter studies the problems of the then mass-produced American alarm clock with pin anchor escapement. Next come high quality clocks. Using the classic "regulator" as an example, everything that is important to precision clocks is examined and, if necessary, corrected.

These include, amongst other things, the wheel engagements, the Graham rate, and the countwheel striking mechanisms. A brief introduction into electric watches is followed by the chapter on pocket watchmaking. Again, the focus is on the most popular types and, logically, it begins with the cylinder remontoir clock. The disassembly and pre-testing is followed by repair, cleaning, and assembly, as well as regulation: from minute drive, hand shaft, cannon pinion, gear movement via cylinder gear, coil spring to the dial.

This is followed by a detailed description of the piston tooth gear and the Roskopf escapement. Short instructions on housing work on pocket watches form the conclusion of the book.

Of course, the book is based on the state of process and technology 1920, and so some of the author's advice looks somewhat exotic from today's point of view. For example. he recommends "burning off" the chains of Black Forest clocks with nitric acid, adding a pinch of snuff to give the chains a nice reddish colour.

All in all, Hanke's Uhrmacherlehre is suitable for owners and collectors of clocks or watches who have a need and the curiosity to learn a little more about their clocks and watches and to overcome the awe of carrying out simple work themselves. Due to its easy and comprehensible readability, this work offers a very reasonably priced and recommended entry into the relevant matter.
