Clock Striking Mechanisms in Repair

Clock book on the repair of clock striking mechanisms

The re-publication of some clock books and clock attachments on the subject of ""striking mechanisms"" intends to close a painful perceived gap in the clock industry literature. This area has been given too little attention in the past and in contemporary literary work. The expert working on old clocks, the interested layman, but also the historian involved in scientific work will again have information about the striking mechanics of clock striking mechanisms at their disposal with the clock book.

How do you repair the striking mechanism of a clock?

After a brief sketch of the oldest striking mechanisms, the first part of this reprint edition reproduces the German translation of a discourse by Emile James, a commercial teacher at the Geneva watchmaker's school, circa 1900, titled ""Striking Mechanisms and Repetitions"". This work was sent by the author subdivided into a first part with practical hints, concerning to both clocks and watches (the latter is omitted in this book and can be found in the book, ""Complicated Pocket Watches in Repair"", ISBN 978-3-941539- 30-3), and a theoretical second part, which presents the subject matter well illustrated with many examples. With precise explanations, the author guides the reader through a variety of striking mechanisms for clocks.

Description of clock striking mechanisms

In addition, less frequently encountered clock striking mechanisms are described and presented in this book about clock striking mechanisms. Thus, the author succeeds, with a skilful selection of certain types of striking mechanisms (countwheel and rack striking mechanisms), to convey to the reader the transferability of certain mechanical processes to other types of striking mechanisms not described and illustrated. In the second part of his monograph, James discusses the subdivision of the individual functional parts, their design features, and mathematical calculations.

Reference Book for Clock Striking Mechanisms

In 1935, Gustav-Adolf Krumm published the book, ""Clock Striking Mechanisms"", along with an appendix, ""Striking Chime Melodies"" by Jakob Baltzer. The time elapsed between the publication of the works becomes evident from the striking mechanisms presented for illustration purposes. As a result of mass production, which became even more prevalent after 1900, the clock industry also arrived at increasingly elaborate versions of the clock striking mechanisms in their products.

Krumm did not want to present a general striking mechanism theory with his writing, but provide the expert with a reference work that should make it possible to carry out proper work on the sometimes quite complicated functioning of the so-called gong striking mechanisms with hammer striking mechanisms, which where manufactured in relatively high volumes in the 20s and 30s of the last century. The author had selected distinctive designs, which a skilled person, with some consideration, would be able to transfer to striking mechanisms that were not described or illustrated. In some places within the text, Krumm refers directly to any parallels or similarities to other named striking mechanism systems or products of other manufacturers.

Repairs to Clock Striking Mechanisms

The first section of his work gives generally useful hints and methods for working on clock striking mechanisms. Simple half and three-quarter striking mechanisms with rake by known companies a covered by a detailed explanation in the second section. For each case, the design layout, the mode of action, and the correct installation are described in detail. A respective added representation - both of a front elevation and the cadrature of the striking mechanisms presented - round off the description well.

Complicated Striking Mechanism Systems in Clocks

The presentation of the complicated striking mechanism systems in clocks in the third section is successful as well. They are comprehensively presented with their control options and individual functional parts.

Striking chime melodies

The appendix to this book on striking mechanisms of clocks includes a compilation of common striking chimes melodies by Jakob Baltzer. In addition to the music examples listed here, this author offers interesting and not so well-known historical connections and data on the creation and origin of the melodies.

Striking Mechanism Forces

The book continues with a publication, again by G.-A. Krumm. For the first time, he calculates the forces in a striking mechanism. Despite some physical deficiencies, these calculations provide a good insight into the ""striking mechanism force ratios"". In a series of journals in the 1950's, Krumm covers striking mechanism, including melody striking mechanism. Even though some things are repeated here, his elaborations consolidate the knowledge of the melody and striking mechanism.

Articles on Striking Mechanisms

This is followed by a few short articles on striking mechanisms by various authors, rounding off this compilation.

Journal Articles about Striking Mechanisms

An enclosed CD (approx. 650 MB) contains countless other journal articles (Allgemeines Journal der Uhrmacherkunst, Die Uhr, Deutsche Uhrmacherzeitung, Österreichisch-Ungarische Uhrmacherzeitung) about striking mechanisms, animations, and training material and, not to forget, an interesting article by Wolfgang Lympius: ""The Striking Mechanism Cadrature with Jumping Trigger“. The text of all articles on the CD is searchable, depending on the quality of the original.

All in all, this is an unprecedented watch book on the topic of striking mechanisms.

Note: This repair book for clocks includes two sets of paginations. One refers to the respective article, the other one is continuous, printed above, and refers to the complete clock book; it can therefore also be found in the table of contents. A subject index at the end of the clock book aids find the individual striking mechanism types quickly. The page numbers listed there refer to the overall book pagination.
