How to look after your watch properly: 5 simple tips

A high-quality wristwatch is more than just a timepiece - it is a daily companion, an expression of style and personality. And just like a good pair of shoes or a fine leather accessory, your watch also deserves some attention. With the right care, it will not only look good, but will also last a long time.

Here are our 5 best care tips for a long watch life:

1. Clean gently on a regular basis

Dust, sweat and skin oils build up on the case, strap or glass over time. Clean your watch regularly with a soft, slightly damp microfibre cloth. For metal bracelets, you can also use a soft toothbrush and some mild soapy water - but please: never hold your watch directly under running water if it is not explicitly waterproof.

2. Be careful with water - even with "water resistant"

"Water resistant" does not automatically mean "off to the swimming pool"! Check how water-resistant your watch really is (e.g. 3 ATM = splash-proof, 10 ATM = suitable for swimming). And: The seals age! Have them checked regularly - especially if you often wear your watch for sports or outdoors.

3. Heat, cold, chemicals?

Please avoid extreme temperatures, direct sunlight and aggressive chemicals (e.g. cleaning agents, perfume or chlorinated water) can damage the case, seals and movements. Tip: It is better to take your watch off when sunbathing, in a steam bath or during renovation work.

4. Regular maintenance by a professional

Even the best movement needs care. A mechanical watch should be serviced about every 3-5 years - quartz watches usually a little less often. This involves cleaning, oiling and checking the movement. This maintains the accuracy of the movement - and small problems are recognised early.

5. Correct storage when it is not in use

When you are not wearing your watch, it is best to store it in a watch box or on a watch cushion. This will protect it from dust, scratches and accidental drops. A watch winder is suitable for automatic watches to prevent them from standing still.
